Ink Flight #48 Reveal, January 2021

Our first Ink Flight for 2021 takes us to a picturesque shop in Southern France known for their use of the pastel plant in manufacturing all-natural, quality dyes. L'Artisan Pastellier uses natural raw materials and traditional recipes to create pigments and dyes for art supplies. Their Callifolio collection of fountain pen inks have an international reputation for quality and can be mixed together to create a near-infinite range of colors.

Here is a rundown of January 2021's Ink Flight colors -

Callifolio "Grenat"
Inspired by garnet gemstones, the rich, pinkish burgundy of this ink has a demure quality on the page.

Callifolio "Andrinople"
Formerly the name of what is now known as Edirne, Turkey, Andrinople was famous for its red dye. Vibrant, saturated color with excellent flow.

Callifolio "Inti"
Named after the ancient Incan sun god, this golden-brown ink has nice shading.

Callifolio "Sépia"
Sépia pigment is traditionally derived from the ink sac of the common cuttlefish. This Sepia ink has a light, milky brown color.

Callifolio "Olivastre"
This deep, forest green ink has rich saturation and decent shading.

Callifolio "Olifants"
Olifants gets its name from the river in South Africa. This blue-black ink has a slight lean towards teal. Decent shading with a slight hint of sheen on Tomoe River.

Callifolio "Mediterranée"
This medium-toned blue ink has good shading and low water resistance.

Tasting Notes:
While I wasn't incredibly impressed with the Mediterranee (I have impeccably high standards of excitement over blue inks), the other colors in this line have just enough uniqueness to be fun to write with. Andrinople has got me swooning for it's intoxicating dark magenta color. While I have not tried mixing any of the colors together, the colors by themselves are plenty enjoyable.

Box Extras: Endless Storyboard Pocket Notebooks, Edition 2: "The Farm"

Made in India, these pocket-sized (3.5" x 5.9"), thread-bound notebooks tell a story about one of the most significant influences on human development. "The Farm" is a two-pack of notebooks with covers that colorfully illustrate the sowing and reaping of farmland.

Each notebook contains 64 pages of ink-friendly 90gsm paper with a dot grid format. Sow your ideas and dreams to later reap a reality of your own creation. "The Farm" is a limited production of 3500 packs worldwide and will not be produced again in this cover design.

To provide the bounty of the harvest to American families in need, InkJournal donated 10 meals through Feeding America for each January Ink Flight Box sold.

Additionally, January's box included a theme card - "Grow as a writer." A sticker was also included that featured a hand-drawn illustration of a plant that has nib-shaped leaves.

The theme card included a writing prompt and an invitation to join a virtual workshop with Ink Flight members. The meet was held on Friday, January 22nd. Thanks to Jennifer, Melinda, and Gary for their brave participation. It was a fun time! In addition to sharing writing prompt responses, next month's meetup can also include discussing the month's Ink Flight colors and extras. It's a work in progress, but I want to get more of the Ink Flight community involved so we can connect in our shared passion together.

Let's chat about this Flight
