Ink Flight #64, May 2022

When we first sampled Pennonia Inks back in Ink Flight #49, I knew we had to dip into this brand again at a later time. The story of Pennonia's founder, Máté, is similar to several ink manufacturers that have popped up in the last decade or so. Starting as a fountain pen enthusiast who had an ink color scratch to itch, Máté made ink as an extension of the hobby. In the last 4 years, Pennonia built a reputation for producing quality inks with exciting colors that fountain pen enthusiasts enjoy.

In this set of inks, we focused on many of the lightly-saturated, multi-chromatic shading inks to reflect a late-spring color palette.

Here is a rundown of this month's ink color selection:

May 2022 Ink Flight Box #64 "Currently Inked" Color Selection

Pennonia Patina
Inspired by the verdigris seen on the monuments and buildings of Budapest.

Pennonia Abigél
This pink ink shines brightly when exposed to ultra-violet light.

Pennonia Mustvörös
This warm, shading brown ink is inspired by must (young wine).

Pennonia Zuzmó
Like the simple lichen, this ink displays many different shades and colors.

Pennonia Orgona
This lilac ink, just like the namesake flower, mesmerizes with its beautiful, soft colors.

Pennonia Balaton-kék
This blue, multi-chromatic ink is an homage to Lake Balaton - an iconic geographical landmark in Hungary.

Pennonia Almazöld
This apple green ink has shading and some water resistance.

Here's a great unboxing and swabbing of all this month's inks you can find on the Dormouse's Desk.

Box Extras: Elia Note Ink Swab Notebook & Brause Bandzug Dip Nib + Wood Holder

Elia Note Ink Swab log and Brause Bandzug Nib with wooden holder

Elia Note is an independent notebook maker in Malaysia that specializes in crafting books with Tomoe River paper. The Ink Swab notebook has the same spirit as the InkJournal notebook for pen and ink collecting. Unfortunately, Elia discontinued the Ink Swab notebook. Fortunately for the Ink Flight crew, I grabbed all their remaining stock to share in this month's Flight.

To fulfill the quantity needed for the Ink Flight subscribers, each box included a random color cover notebook. Regardless of the exterior, the interior is where it counts. These books contain 40 pages of 52gsm Japanese Tomoe River Paper, which is becoming rarer and rarer these days!

Each page has a preformatted template to swab and evaluate an ink. Since Tomoe River is so thin, Elia printed the template only on one side of the page. With each page, you can evaluate an ink's dry time, saturation, sheening, shading, and so on.

A dip nib is an effective tool to sample fountain pen ink without having to fill and clean a fountain pen. In this month's flight, we encourage you to play with your ink and practice calligraphy using the Brause Bandzug 1.5mm nib. Installed in a natural wooden holder, the Bandzug nib has a crisp line best suited for broad edge calligraphy.

The nib is designed to hold a reservoir of ink on the top of the nib. This helps keep you letting for longer between dips into the ink bottle.

Have you ever been stuck in traffic, running some boring errand, or obligated to attend some event when you thought to yourself, "I'd so rather be writing right now?" The magnet included in this month's box captures this feeling. Attach it to your car, refrigerator, or anywhere else a magnet might stick safely.
