Ink Flight #67 Reveal, August 2022

In August 2022, we revisited Sailor (Japan) to sample the mysterious range of Yurameku inks. Ink Flight subscribers are certainly no strangers to multi-chromatic shading inks. Sailor is one of the best in the business. This set of complex, shifty inks stands as a testament to their ink-making prowess.

It's always a pleasure to try new Sailor inks, as they continue to amaze with an ever-expanding color palette of fun, on-trend inks that behave well in fountain pens.

Since these ink colors appear differently on different papers, I shall describe them on 68gsm Tomoe River Paper.  Here is a rundown of this month's ink color selection:

August 2022 Ink Flight Box #67 "Currently Inked" Color Selection

Sailor Yurameku Amamoyoi
At the heart of this mossy green color is a juicy violet.

Sailor Yurameku Itezora
Like the early dawn sun appearing behind a calm sea. This ink's dusky aqua blue harbors clouds of pink.

Sailor Yurameku Yoi
This medium-toned grey ink has some purple and green lurking below the surface.

Sailor Yurameku Kangyou
This blueish-gray ink exhibits shading with violet and green patina.

Sailor Yurameku Kyokkou
This dusky pink color is offset with cyan and green shading.

Sailor Yurameku Seki
The warm, beige color serves as a base for magenta and green tones.

Sailor Yurameku Kyokuya
A soft, brownish green, this color has slight undertones of lilac.

In most Ink Flights, subscribers will experience a diverse range of inks - all the colors of the rainbow. Inks can be shaders, saturated sheeners, shimmer, etc. This month, we included the entire Sailor Yurameku collection that was recently released in the USA. All these inks are lightly saturated, multi-chromatic shaders. They are tricky in that they display differently depending on the type of paper you use. Of course, fountain pen friendly paper (like the type we usually include as a bonus item in the Ink Flight Box) will highlight the shading the best.

It's hard to define each color as a "purple," "grey," or "green," etc. For example, in broader swabs, Kyokkou looks like a lilac with pink highlights. Writing with it using a fine point Parker Vac makes it look like a purplish gray.

So, despite the fact that all of these inks are lightly-saturated, multi-shaders, they are exciting to explore on different papers and with different nibs. If you find a great combination of nib and paper, please feel free to tag @inkjournal on social media so I can give you a shoutout.

Box Extras: Ohto Tasche Pocket Fountain Pen and Book Darts Page Markers

Measuring a petite 4 inches closed, the Ohto Tasche fountain pen easily fits wherever you need to stash an on-the-go writing instrument. Pull the bottom end of the barrel to unsheath the writing end of the pen. When the Ohto Tasche's cap is posted on the back, the pen extends to a full-sized 5.75 inches in length.

From Ohto (Japan), this aluminum fountain pen packs ample writing ability in a compact design. The stainless steel nib, tipped in iridium, fills using international-sized ink cartridges (sorry, no converter available). To fill the pen, unscrew the grip section from the back end to access the cartridge and plug it in.

Book Darts are precision-cut, paper-thin metal line markers that attach easily to any page. To use, place Book Dart at the desired line, close the book, and press in. Sliding a Dart onto a passage assures you can recall it easily even in a closed book. Use these darts again and again without damaging your favorite books.

The "Travel Tips" sleeve of Book Darts contains a mixed assortment of 12 darts in brass, bronze, and stainless steel.

With the travel-ready Ohto fountain pen and Book Darts for reading, join the Inktopus on a relaxing holiday! Vanessa Langton (@vanessa_langton) designed this month's exclusive Inktopus sticker for our Ink Flight subscribers.
