Ink Flight #68 Reveal, September 2022

It's time once again to make some inky trouble. In this month's Ink Flight box, subscribers received several new colors from Troublemaker Inks located in the Philippines. Contrary to the name, "Troublemaker Inks" are not difficult to use in your fountain pens. Each color is 100% mixed and bottled by hand.

In the summer of 2022, Troublemaker introduced several new colors into their lineup, including four of the seven inks included in this month's box. In this post, we'll talk about the inks and the extra fountain pen-related goodies.

Troublemaker inks

September 2022 Ink Flight Box #68 "Currently Inked" Color Selection

Troublemaker Nenita
The most saturated of this month's inks, Nenita is a rich burgundy with a high green-black sheen. New Summer 2022 color.

Troublemaker Moon River
This pink ink has dreamy, multi-chromatic shading tones of green and blueish gray. New Summer 2022 color.

Troublemaker Tuslob Buwa
Named after a popular Filipino food found in Cebu City, this ink has a gravy-like hue that shades well. New Summer 2022 color.

Troublemaker Polar Lights
This deep purple-black ink looks like a night sky with the shimmer of Aurora Borealis. New Summer 2022 color.

Troublemaker Mango
This juicy golden orange has a deep shading effect. A great candidate for a fall-appropriate ink.

Troublemaker Foxglove
This multi-chromatic shading ink takes on the stunning violet hues of the flowering plant it's named after.

Troublemaker Abalone
Matches well with abalone or raden pens - this multi-chromatic ink has a light blue base with clouds of purple and teal edging.

Tasting Notes: After last month's fleet of undersaturated Sailor Yurameku inks, these lively Troublemaker colors put "pep" in my pens. True, there were a few multi-chromatic shaders in the group. But, they offered more robust color on the page than last month's hues. I'm surprised by how much I like Moon River. Abalone is another stand-out for its depth and complexity. Nenita is the lone sheener in the group and has a surprisingly wet flow. I looked up what Tuslob Buwa was and can say, with confidence, that I won't be trying that dish anytime soon. The ink looks cool, though. I had a little trouble with Mango feathering slightly - I don't know if it was just me. Polar Lights has a fun shimmer. Foxglove has a calm and delicate appearance. Overall, these Troublemaker Inks are highly enjoyable and I'll be keeping an eye on future releases to keep you all updated on any new colors coming from this creative company.

Box Extras: Private Reserve Ink Essentials Standard Cartridge Refill Kit + Pipsticks “The Write Tools” Stickers

Savor every last drop of your fountain pen ink with the handy "Essential" kit from Private Reserve. Included are two syringes with blunt needles and 20 empty international-size ink cartridges. Since most cartridge/converter pens made around the world use the international size (i.e. last month's Ohto fountain pen), these come in handy when a converter might not be convenient or compatible.

Both the cartridges and the syringes are reusable if they are properly washed out with water (or pen flush) after filling. The syringe is also helpful to shoot water (or ink) into a pen's converter or in the barrel of an eyedroppered pen.

It's also possible to store ink in the cartridges by placing package (or office) tape over the opening of the cartridge. Alternatively, you could use a low-temperature hot glue gun to seal the cartridge with a bead of glue.

Ink Flight subscribers were treated to many exciting stickers to celebrate the coming of fall and back-to-school time in September. The Pipsticks "Write Tools" 4" x 4" sticker sheet has holographic highlights. Designed by Vanessa Langton (@vanessa_langton on Instagram), this month's Inktopus sticker is fully embracing the #fallvibes with a Pumpkin Spice beverage in tentacle.
